A guesthouse room in Bamyan, clean, with a view down the valley: about thirty dollars. Dinner for two in Kabul with more food than you can finish: under ten. A pot of green tea, brought without being asked: usually nothing at all.
Afghanistan is one of the least expensive countries on earth to travel in. What costs money here is not the country — it is getting to it, and getting around it properly.
How much does a trip to Afghanistan cost?
Budget roughly $110–300 per day for a fully guided private trip, or $40–100 per day travelling independently. Independent daily budgets sit around $30–50 at the frugal end and $70–100 for comfortable mid-range travel; guided trips average out near $140 a day once everything is included.
The spread is wide because it depends almost entirely on group size, which is the single biggest lever you control.

Travelling alone costs meaningfully more than travelling as a pair, and a pair costs more per head than a group of three. If you are flexible on dates, tell us — sharing a trip with others is the cheapest thing you can do.
What is not in the price
Be honest with your own budget about these, because they are what turn a $999 trip into a $2,000 one:
- International flights. Usually the largest single line. Kabul connects through Dubai, Istanbul and Islamabad.
- Your visa — about $130 all in. How the e-visa works.
- Specialist travel insurance. Standard policies exclude countries under a do-not-travel advisory, so you need cover bought deliberately. Do not skip this.
- Personal spending — souvenirs, tips, meals outside the itinerary. Most people find $30–60 a day covers it comfortably; many spend less.
What things actually cost on the ground
- Street food — a bolani off a cart, small change
- A restaurant meal — $2–4 for something local, more in a Kabul restaurant
- A decent guesthouse room — $30–50 a night
- A pot of tea — often simply given
- Domestic flights, Kabul to Herat or Mazar — inexpensive, and worth it on longer routes to avoid whole days in a vehicle
The gap between the daily cost of living here and the cost of a guided trip is not markup. It is a licensed guide, a driver, a vehicle, hotels checked in person, provincial permits, and someone reachable at three in the morning.
The thing that catches everyone out
Afghanistan runs on cash, and your bank card is worthless here.
The country has been outside the international banking system since 2021 — no SWIFT, no working Visa or Mastercard, ATMs that are unreliable at best. You bring every dollar you will spend, in cash, and there is no topping up.
Worse, money changers reject notes that are torn, marked, taped or old. Order clean, new bills from your bank a couple of weeks before you fly. The money guide covers exactly what to ask for — it is the single most useful hour of preparation you can do.
Our trips are settled by bank transfer before you arrive, which means the only cash you carry is your own spending money. That is deliberate: nobody should be flying in with a fortnight's tour cost strapped to their waist.
How to spend less
- Travel with other people. Three sharing rather than going solo can cut the per-person price by a third or more.
- Go in spring or autumn. Better weather, better roads, fewer surprises — and surprises cost money.
- Take a shorter, deeper route. Four days in Bamyan beats a rushed fortnight, and costs a fraction.
- Use domestic flights on the long circuits. They are cheap and they buy back days you would otherwise lose to the road.
- Ask about a custom trip. Built around what you actually want, it is often cheaper than a fixed itinerary with things in it you do not care about.
Is it worth it?
For what a fortnight in a Mediterranean resort costs, you can spend a fortnight somewhere fewer people visit in a year than pass through Heathrow in an hour — with a guide who grew up there, in a country where strangers hand you tea for no reason at all.
That is the actual value, and it does not show up in a daily rate.
